| So the wedding date has been set, the wedding coordinator hired, and the dress has been purchased. Right around this time, couples start to think about their honeymoon. A honeymoon is defined by Webster's Dictionary as not only a "trip or vacation taken by a newly married couple," but also as "a period of harmony immediately following marriage." It is important to find a travel professional that understands that honeymoons are the harmonious start of your life together. Honeymoons are not just another vacation, so while you may in the past have booked a memorable vacation on your own, you should consider utilizing a travel professional whose niche is romance travel and specifically honeymoon travel.

So how do you prepare for this special travel experience? Here are some tips:
- Find a local travel professional that is willing to spend at least an hour with you exploring the ingredients of your dream honeymoon initially. During this meeting, your agent should explore likes and dislikes of past travel experiences, determine your travel budget, learn what types of activities you would enjoy doing while on your trip, and make some initial recommendations based on the information you have provided.
- Determine if you want to go on your honeymoon immediately after your nuptials or wait a few months -- couples do both!
- Find out if your travel professional offers a complimentary honeymoon registry, which is a registry that works very much like a gift registry, albeit the "gifts" are things like candlelight dinners on the beach, snorkeling experiences, etc.
- Plan early. While it is easy to get caught up in the details of the wedding and reception, make sure you contact your travel professional at least 6 to 9 months in advance of your planned honeymoon date. Planning your honeymoon does not mean planning every detail, it does however assure you of better room category options, flights and even excursions. It also allows you to take your time and savor the experience of planning a once in a lifetime trip!
- Ask your travel professional to assist you with your whole honeymoon package -- the package could include your accommodation, your flights, your ground transportation, spa experience, excursions, special resort experiences like candlelight dinners on the beach, and travel insurance.
- Keep in mind, a 7 to 10 day honeymoon is optimal for most destinations that are easily accesible from the East Coast. If you are planning a honeymoon destination a little further afield, for instance Bora Bora, Hawaii or the Maldives, you should plan to add extra days for the amount of time it will take you to travel to these locations and adjust to the time difference. Coming back feeling relaxed and ready to start your lives together is the goal here, not to feel like a harried traveler because you didn't plan accordingly.
- If you are planning an international destination or cruise, please make sure you have a valid passport and that it will not expire within 6 months of travel. A travel professional can walk you through this process.
- Select a travel professional that will be there for you before, during and after your travel experience. A solid travel professional will be available to answer any questions you have before your travel, will be there to assist you with any situations that arise during your travel and will want follow up with you after you return to make sure the trip met or exceeded your expectations. A professional agent will care very much about your feedback, so please share it with them freely!
So armed with these pointers, start planning the magic of your honeymoon experience! We know you will be glad that you did.
